- Leavis, F.R.
- b. 1895, Cambridge; d. 1978Academic and criticFrank Raymond Leavis was a teacher of English at Cambridge, whose mid-century authority derived from his co-editorship of the journal Scrutiny (1932– 53) and numerous works of humanist literary and cultural criticism. A cultural conservative, Leavis valorized the ‘great tradition’ of English literature as the most organic, vital and morally serious use of the national language. He saw the task of criticism as the preservation and affirmation of the national language, literature and culture, against the disin-tegrating effects of capitalist modernity and mass media. Leavis’s important works include Revaluation (1936) and The Great Tradition (1948).See also: literary theoryMARK DOUGLAS
